Fork restaurant in Cape Town is a real tapa place

Fork restaurant in Cape Town is a real tapa place, where the owner Ed is making you feel at home from the first day. Best Tapa’s in town, fresh specially made every day and with a nice glass of wine. For lunch you can’t go wrong at Fork.

At FORK they serve contemporary Tapas, an evolution of the old and still existing Spanish ways, a spirit of sharing smaller plates of food, and a culinary sensation of experiencing different tastes all in the same meal. It is about having fun, experimenting, sharing, eating your fill and enjoying some good wine with friends, acquaintances and business colleagues without the drear and formality of one large plate of food.

Whether you’re looking for a few snacks to tide you over before popping out for a show at The New Space Theatre, or keen to try as many of the chef Jonathan Japha’s bite-sized creations as you can in one sitting, you’ll be wiling away the time in this cool, slightly industrial spot.

Carne SA in Cape town is heaven for meat-lovers. From the the same owner as 95 Keerom, and located oposite of the Keerom restaurant.

Giorgio Nava, well known chef and proprietor of Cape Town’s award winning 95 Keerom, is spreading his Milanese flair with the opening of his second signature restaurant – Carne SA – situated directly opposite 95’s front door in Keerom Street.

Dedicated entirely to meat as is evident from its Italian name, Carne SA is a carnivore’s paradise serving a unique offering of the finest cuts of Romagnola beef, Dorper lamb, game and more.

Patrons of Carne can look forward to an exclusive menu featuring the very best meat Southern Africa has to offer, aspiring to indulge the meat lover with an extensive choice of beef of which its calibre can be traced back to its farm, aging time and whether it was grain or grass fed. Italian chef giorgio Nava likes south african beef so much he bought two cattle farms in the Karoo. his stylish steak venue serves deliciously dry-aged meat and the butchers produce non-standard, super-flavoursome portions.

In a genre not known for its innovation, this is an elegant, delicious and new take on an old form.

The lineup for this year's Cape Town International Jazz Festival certainly lives up to its name

Cape Town becomes the music capital of the world when it celebrates its annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival for two days long.

The lineup for this year’s Festival, which marks the 11th anniversary of the event, certainly lives up to its name with the range of music represented for 2010 stretches far beyond the boundaries of traditional jazz music.

Organisers of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival have staged another coup. For the festival’s eleventh edition that takes place on Saturday 03 and Sunday 04 April, they have signed up two living music luminaries; the renowned guitarist/vocalist George Benson as well as United States saxophonist Charles Lloyd.

The two will share the Cape Town International Convention Centre stages with headline acts announced at the end of 2009: the McCoy Tyner Trio which has saxophonist Gary Bartz as a guest; violinist Regina Carter in her exploration of the music of the African Diaspora with her Reverse Thread project; the high register-hitting vocalist Rachelle Ferrell, the older statesman of jazz Toots Thielemans and our Jonathan Butler who brings with him US trumpeter Rick Braun and Scottish-born saxophonist Richard Elliot as guests.

Known for his splendid and spectacular live performances, Benson will on both nights of the two-day festival close the main Kippies stage. On Saturday, he will stage a George Benson: “An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole” concert. A 28-piece South African orchestra will accompany the master guitarist/vocalist in paying tribute to one of the most important musical personalities of the twentieth century, Nat King Cole. Dubbed the George Benson: “Greatest Hits” show, the performance the following day will be completely different. The fans will have the opportunity to hear on that night all the hits that Benson has belted out over the years.

Like in previous years, the 40-bands who are part of this year’s bill of artists will share five different stages – Kippies as the main stage of the festival; Moses Molelekwa stage for less known but very talented musicians; Basil “Manenberg” Coetzee stage for those that specialise in fusion and other experimental music; Bassline for contemporary jazz-related contemporary style such as hip-hop and kwaito; and the Rosies stage reserved for more acoustic sounds. New additions to the Rosies stage are Makeson Browne & Akoustic Knot and Mervyn Africa (Kaap Finale).

Multi-instrumentalist Mark Fransman, used his alter ego Makeson Browne to bring together Cape Town-based musicians whose desire is explore the boundaries of acoustic music. Under the name Akoustic Knot, the musical group does interactive improvisations with painters/sculptors where all those on stage seek to push each other to greater artistic heights. Swedish alto-saxophonist Johan Hörlén will join Akoustic Knot on stage.
Kaap Finale is pianist Mervyn Africa’s reincarnation of a band he formed in the 1980s when he lived in Britain for more than twenty years.

For many people, the surprise artist of the festival will be young pianist, Jason Moran. Moran who is also a member of the Charles Lloyd New Quartet, leads his own outfit, Bandwagon.

Sensing the excitement around some of the names on this year’s list of performers, those who want to be part of the festival must book now. With the festival this year taking place during Easter weekend and with the Two Oceans marathon being staged in the same period not only will there be a scramble for tickets but there will so much pressure on accommodation and travel arrangements to Cape Town.

Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite-Checkers stores.

Cape Town International Jazz Festival Event dates:
Sat 3rd April 2010 & Sun 4th April 2010

Cape Town Carnival and is set to be a weekend of inclusive fun

The Cape Town Carnival aims at bringing together the diverse communities of the city through music, dance, creative and cultural expression. The Carnival festival will take place from 18 – 20 March 2010 with the grand parade taking place in Cape Town’s CBD on the 20th.

The Carnival will celebrate the Cape’s heritage and creativity, contributing to social cohesion and economic growth over time. With a mass of over 2000 cross-genre, cross-cultural performers partaking in the event, six original Carnival songs that will get the people dancing and a spectacular float and elaborate costumes as draw cards, there should be something to suit just about anyone’s taste.

The Carnival Parade is a free-access event, encouraging all of Cape Town to share in the fun and excitement. In addition to the festivities of the main parade, spectators can also look forward to celebrations after the event. A range of other fringe events can also be expected.

The Cape Town Carnival endeavours to create something new, where communities interact and celebrate our uniqueness, but also unite as citizens of one of the most beautiful cities of the world. While Rio Carnival represents a benchmark in relation to our quest, Cape Town Carnival will be distinctly and uniquely representative of our South African demographic, psychographic and cultural representation. The Carnival is optimistic that this event will strengthen social cohesion and cultural expression, the building of community self-esteem and development and the creation of positive spin-offs for the local economy and especially tourism.

The theme for the 2010 Carnival is “Rhythm, Roots & Boots”, celebrating Cape Town’s inherent talent in all things cultural and artistic, as well as paying tribute to our rich heritage.

The Cape Town Carnival and is set to be a weekend of inclusive fun for Capetonians and visitors alike.

The Grand Daddy Hotel in Cape Town, South Africa is the world’s first hotel to boast a penthouse suite of seven authentic vintage Airstream trailers; The Airstream Penthouse Park, resulting in a luxury accommodation experience with a novel spin.

The Grand Daddy has taken creativity to new heights with all its rooms and communal spaces with magical creative touches to ensure that guests are pleasantly surprised by the unexpected, the humorous and the interesting.

Owners Jody and Nick and their staff headed to the US to source the sleek sliver ‘land yachts’ that now constitute their unique penthouse suites. Each has been decorated by different artists and designers to specific themes. The concepts ranged from The Ballad of John & Yoko, adorned with a guitar and simple white interior, to Goldilocks and The Three Bears, which has a quaint storybook feel to it. Decking, trees and plants create a garden in the sky, supplemented by a mini outdoor cinema where retro drive-in and art house movies will be screened.

The Grand Daddy feels like a family-owned hotel and in some respects it is. It is a part of the Daddy Long Legs Group, who also brought us Cape Town’s original art hotel, Daddy Long Legs, and the Daddy Long Legs Self Catering Apartments. The philosophy is simple – provide excellent service, clean, comfortable rooms, a creative feel and charge less for it!
